Cost & Comp: Project Profitability Report

The Project Profitability Report compares project revenue against configured labor costs and other tracked costs to surface gross margins across your organization. Use it to identify high- and low-profitability projects, compare branches and project types, spot margin trends over time, and diagnose gaps in your cost and compensation setup.

Use This Report to Answer Questions Like:

What is our gross margin across projects this month?
Which branches are the most and least profitable?
Which project types generate the highest average revenue vs. labor cost?
Which projects have high revenue but low margin?
Are all billing libraries configured with cost and compensation items?

Filters

Use the filters at the top of the report to narrow the data: Date Range, Date Type, Branch, Project Statuses, Include Cancelled Jobs, Coordinator, Project Type, Job Tags, Salesperson, Project Tags, Job Type.

The Profit Trend Chart Date Breakdown selector (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Yearly) controls how the trend chart groups data over time.

Report Sections

1 - KPI Summary Metrics

Metric	Description
Total Revenue	Sum of all invoiced revenue across matching projects.
Total Configured Labor Costs	Sum of all compensation cost items across matching projects.
Total Tracked Other Costs	Sum of all non-labor cost items (materials, third-party services, etc.).
Gross Margin	Revenue minus labor costs minus other costs.
Avg Gross Margin %	Average gross margin percentage across all matching projects.

2 - Profit Trend (Chart)

Time-series bar chart showing Gross Margin, Revenue, and Tracked Labor Cost over the selected date range, grouped by the Date Breakdown selector. Use it to spot periods where costs spiked relative to revenue.

3 - Profitability by Branch (Chart)

Bar chart comparing Revenue and Tracked Labor Cost side by side for each branch.

4 - Average Profitability by Project Type (Chart)

Grouped bar chart comparing average Revenue and average Tracked Labor Cost per project type. Identifies which service offerings are most profitable.

5 - Project Profitability (Table)

Project-level breakdown of revenue and costs. Key columns:

Column	Description
Revenue	Total invoiced revenue for this project.
Tracked Labor Cost	Sum of compensation cost items.
Tracked Other Cost	Sum of non-labor cost items.
Gross Margin	Revenue minus all tracked costs.
Gross Margin %	Gross margin as a percentage of revenue.
Has Cost Data	Whether this project has any compensation cost items configured.

Also includes: Project URL, Project Id, Customer, Branch, Project Type, Status, Move Date, Salesperson, Coordinator, Project Created, Project Tags, Employee Count, Compensation Item Count, and Other Item Count.

6 - Overall Cost and Compensation Coverage

Percentage of projects with compensation items configured. A quick health check on billing library setup.

7 - Cost Coverage Diagnostic

Identifies gaps in cost and compensation configuration per billing library — missing compensation items, $0 rates, or rates computing $0 due to missing project data. Includes a direct link to each library's settings.
